Life as a Modern Apprentice

Life as a Modern Apprentice

In February of this year I began my Modern Apprenticeship with TC Young in Edinburgh. I am an Admin Assistant within the Property Department and the tasks I carry out as a modern apprentice can differ day to day. Some of the duties are:

  • Collecting mail in the morning as well as alternate evenings
  • Doing the filing for the solicitors
  • Collecting and preparing banking and recorded deliveries
  • Writing cheques
  • Preparing meetings and clearing up once finished
  • Arranging for delivery/collection from our offsite storage company
  • Undertakings all errands and deliveries

In addition to this I have been covering breaks and lunches on reception which enables me to gain more experience in administration as well as build upon my communication skills.?Initially I was anxious about answering phone calls and dealing with the public however I enjoy it and feel more comfortable than I first anticipated. Experiencing reception cover has allowed to me to learn new areas such as dealing with card payments over the phone as well as in person. Being the first point of contact for clients has helped me to conduct myself in a professional manner at all times as well as being approachable and friendly.

Another thing I like about my job is that I get the chance to move around the office and speak to other members of staff which breaks up my day and gets me away from my desk. The staff at TC Young are very friendly and have helped me slot into the team and find my feet in my first job. What I like about the team is that everyone is very helpful in answering any queries that I have.

At the end of my Modern Apprentice I hope to expand on my knowledge in business and? administration. Despite only working here for a short period of time, I feel like I have learnt a lot and I am continuing to learn more all the time.
