What we do
Community Renewables & Regeneration
Many of our communities face social and economic issues, which, if not tackled effectively will result in their steady decline into poverty and social exclusion. A strategy of community regeneration – including community buyouts and all the activities identified in the wider action agenda – will create successful and sustainable communities.
While tackling deprivation is critical for communities it is not the only driver of community regeneration. New legislation permits communities to take control of their destinies and they are grabbing the opportunity and doing just that! This can mean simply buying out their land and housing. Or, in some instances, they are buying out forested areas or similar and giving new twists to previous usages.
Regeneration
We have a long involvement acting for clients involved in regeneration in both urban and rural situations. We can provide a full range of services to regeneration agencies including advice on:
- Setting up organisations
- Legal structures and governance
- Charitable status
- Property acquisition
- Leasing
- Funding
- Compliance and regulation
- Procurement development
- Community contracts
Recent highlights include the development of workspace units in inner city areas and our work with developing community energy initiatives.
Renewables
At TC Young we have considerable experience acting for community bodies seeking to develop community energy initiatives. We have worked closely with Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust in relation to their wind turbine development. In addition we worked with Tiree from the outset on their community wind turbine project which is the first of its kind in Scotland. This project was realised through funding from the Big Lottery and the Co-op bank. We worked closely with the project team through every step of the way including the governance arrangements with the charity parent and the turbine operator subsidiary. This involved issues ranging from the lease of the turbine site, funding arrangements, procurement and operational contracts.
Community wind turbine projects are continuing apace and TC Young is working for groups on Lewis, Orkney as well as on the mainland.
