Life as a Trainee at TC Young

Life as a Trainee at TC Young

I recently began my traineeship with TC Young. I have joined the busy court department and I am enjoying working as a trainee solicitor. Although I have only been at TC Young for a short time, I feel that I have learnt a lot already.

TC Young offers a unique experience compared to other firms of its size, they do not move their trainees around departments in 6 month slots and my entire traineeship will be spent within the court department. This will allow me to become far more experienced in my chosen area of law and I have seen first hand how knowledgeable and highly regarded, by both clients and in their departments, second year trainees at TC Young are.

Right from my first day on the job, I was given the opportunity to be involved in real cases. I work on a wide range of housing law issues, mainly for Registered Social Landlords, on cases from all over Scotland. TC Young waste no time in allowing their trainees to get hands on experience. I have already appeared in front of a Sheriff at Glasgow Sheriff Court and will be given the opportunity to progress towards more complex cases as I advance through my traineeship.

I enjoy working alongside people who are regarded as experts in their fields and are eager to help me learn and develop my skills. Everyone is always willing to help when I have a question. The friendly and helpful nature of both the legal and support staff made me feel very welcome and part of the team from the start.

There is no real typical day for me and I can be doing a number of different tasks. This could be:

  • Taking court instructions from clients for cases calling in court,
  • Preparing cases for proof
  • Carrying out legal research
  • Negotiating with defender's agents
  • Appearing in court
  • Drafting legal documents
  • Responding to queries from clients

I am now looking forward to the next two years of my traineeship and I am excited about my future at TC Young.
